SSL innovative construction products for reinforced earth Hilfiker type walls

MSEPlus TWO-STAGE WALLS

SSL’s Two-Stage Walls are highly flexible MSE structures designed to accommodate the differential settlements and wall movements that often occur when a heavy MSE backfill structure is built on compressible foundation soils. The system is recommended for all MSE installations when the expected differential settlements along the wall face reach 1/100 or more (i.e., one or more units of vertical settlement for every 100 units of wall length) and when the total expected settlement is three feet or more.

MSE Walls

  • Mechanically stabilized earth wall systems for highway, civil engineering and property development projects.
  • Also known as Reinforced earthen walls, retained earth walls, Hilfiker walls, wire walls, earth retaining structures, reinforced earth walls

A two-stage wall consists of an MSEPlus Wire Wall and an outer covering of precast concrete facing panels that provides the architectural finish.

Construction involves first building the wire-faced wall as designed to accommodate the expected foundation settlements. After primary settlement and a portion of secondary settlement is complete, the concrete facing panels are placed approximately three feet in front of the wire wall face. Each panel is connected to its corresponding reinforcement in the backfill by means of coil loop connectors and threaded coil rods. This configuration allows for the appropriate relative movements between adjacent facing panels and between the facing panels and the primary soil reinforcement in response to the expected settlements.
